Spd ch 1: intro to sustainable property development. Sustainable development- development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. There is still confusion on the definition b/c sd, s, and spd all are contested concepts. Initiated in aristotelian society to help understand abstract, qualitative concepts. Notions that involve endless disputes about their proper uses and cannot be settled by logic. Problem with property development is that decisions are made with imperfect knowledge. Ecocentric worldview perceives ecosystems as part of an integrated environmental system with organisms, biological communities, and ecosystems creating the mantle of life surrounding the planet. Radical ecocentrics- all biotic and abiotic elements have equal and intrinsic value. Problem with that is that child in ghetto has the same value as a family of rats. Ecocentrism can lead to the rejection of human rights.
