Heritability offspring resemble parents: phenotype. Phenotype variation individuals have differences in traits. Heritable variation differences in traits get passed on to offspring. How are variations in traits inherited: gene a unit of heritable material that defines a trait, alleles different versions of a gene that explain variations in a trait, genotype. Asexual reproduction: variation occurs between clonal lineages of an organism, within a lineage, offspring and parents look exactly the same (most of the time) Sexual reproduction: variation occurs between individuals, offspring resemble mix of parental traits. Sexual reproduction produces new combinations of heritable variations in traits. Gametic cells have one set of chromosomes (mom or dad) Embryos have a new combination chromosomes (dad and mom) Telomeres: found at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes, contain no genes.
