Gerd binnig (1947) and heinrich rorer (1933-2013) developed scanning tunneling microscopy (stm), won 1986 nobel peace prize in physics. Stm moves extremely sharp electrode over a surface and measuring the resulting tunneling current. Electrode: conductor through which electricity can enter or leave. Tunneling current: electrical current that flows between electrode tip and surface even though the two are not in physical contact. Can show location of individual atoms by maintaining a constant current between tip and surface. Building atomic machines out of a few atoms. 2. 2 modern atomic theory and the laws that led to it. Law of definite proportions: all samples of a given compound, regardless of their source or how they are prepared, have the same properties of their constituent elements. All atoms of a given element have the same mass and other properties that distinguish them. Atoms combine in simple, whole number ratios to form compounds. Atoms of one element cannot change into atoms of another element.
