KNES 350 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Allostatic Load, Adrenal Medulla, Adrenal Gland
Document Summary
Stress: what state of disharmony, or threatened homeostasis: challenges of everyday life, stressors. Can be external (physical threats) or internal (fear of speaking in public) Stressors can be negative (distress) or positive (eustress) General adaption syndrome (selye, 1936) a continuum of 3 stages: arousal and alarm, resistance, exhaustion, when an acute (short term) stressor is encountered, the initial reaction or stage is referred to as arousal and alarm. Set into motion by a cascade of immediate physiological adaptions to help deal with crisis ( fight or flight ) Fight or flight seems to reflect male response more accurately than female response. Experiences sufficient strain to cause fatigue and numerous, insidious related disorders, including anxiety and depression. Determinants of the stress response were nonspecific. The body (including the brain) has evolved ways to deal successfully with the challenges (i. e. , stressors) we face: promotes well being, and survival, successful adaption requires that such challenges occur consistently.
