Mile durkheim- deviance and crime are always and have always been in societies, so they must serve a positive function for the larger society and its accompanying structures. Deviance allows societies to define and clarify collective beliefs (norms and values) Issue- people relating to institutionalized means (college degree) needed to achieve cultural goals like economic success. Accept cultural goals and the traditional means of achieving those goals. Allows social system to exist without disturbing it: innovators. Accept the same cultural goals as conformists. Deviants because they choose nonconventional routes to success. Functional- allows society to adapt to new external realities.
