Identity--the social label ascribed to an individual or group that locates the individual or group in political society more broadly, at basic level your sense of self. Social identity theory--sees personal identities as linked to & partially derived from group identities & roles. Most important identities in politics are group identities, which draw boundaries between in- groups & out-groups. Sometimes they are sharply bounded, sometimes permeable, sometimes compatible, sometimes incompatible. The change over time & influence & are influenced by the ways power is distributed in society. Must note how they"re constructed & change & how some struggle to identify themselves. National identity--identity that locates one"s social position in relation to national membership; most important form of political identity today. Nationalism--view that the world is & should be divided into nations that are thought of by nationalists as sovereign & egalitarian; idea that nations should be basic unit of social & political life.
