Intrinsic motivation: refers to behavior that is driven by internal rewards. In other words, the motivation to engage in a behavior arises from within the individual because it is naturally satisfying to you. Extrinsic motivation: refers to behavior that is driven by external rewards such as money, fame, grades, and praise. This type of motivation arises from outside the individual, as opposed to intrinsic motivation, which originates inside of the individual. Overjustification effect: the overjustification effect occurs when an expected external incentive such as money or prizes decreases a person"s intrinsic motivation to perform a task. Cognitive dissonance: the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioral decisions and attitude change. Effort justification: effort justification is people"s tendency to attribute a greater value (greater than the objective value) to an outcome they had to put effort into acquiring or achieving.
