Development proceeds from the upper part of the head to the lower parts of the body, this is known as the cephalocaudal approach and it generally makes sense given the importance of the brain. By 8 weeks after conception, the head constitutes half the entire length of the embryo. As children mature, their physical reactions become less global and more specific. Differentiation describes he processes by which behaviors and physical structures become more specialized. The most dramatic gains in height and weight occur during prenatal development. The first year after birth also has big gains in height and weight, the weight triples by the 1st birthday while the height increases by 50%. Though growth has generally been viewed as slow and steady, research suggests that it may occur in spurts, where 90-95% of the time infants are not growing, but change in height after suddenly hitting a spurt.
