ANTH 161 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Antonio Gramsci, Edward Sapir, Universal Grammar
Document Summary
Antonio gramsci described hegemony as one of two primary aspects of power. Define hegemony and provide two concrete examples of how it serves as power. Antonio gramsci was an early 20th-century italian philosopher who studied aspects of power. His first aspect of power, named material power, is commonly known in the world and includes military, political, and economic power. Almost every person in the world is familiar with all, or most, of these types of power within their country. The second aspect of power, hegemony, is the aspect of power that involves the ability to create consent and agreement within a population (guest, 47). In a more simplified definition, hegemony is the power culture has on what people think is normal and natural, especially through cultural institutions such as the media, schools, and religions. Hegemony is different from material power in that material power is often exerted through force, while hegemony is more gradual change without violence.
