The first stage of iberian exploration, conquest and colonization was focused in the caribbean. African slaves became an important and integral part of the story of conquest. Multifaceted, prolonged, and complex conquest that was both achieved by brutal force as well as negotiations. Columbus left spain with queen isabella"s blessing headed to find a sea route to asia. His discoveries in the caribbean lead isabella to sponsor a second large voyage of 1,500 men to set up a colony. Later, a portugal voyage got blown off track and set up a colony in brazil. Portuguese initiative, creation of spain, and opening of atlantic. The portuguese sent explorers out to settle islands, establish trading posts and trade items and people. Azores and madeira islands were settled by portuguese farmers in the 1420s. By 1460, portuguese controlled cape verde islands off. Canary islands became site of special contest.
