Many native elites were upset the way colonization was going. Spanish ranchers and wheat farmers were not respecting their property, and cattle were eating their crops. Villagers wanted king to order his representatives to administer justice and to their surprise, he did. Native communities learned to exploit the colonial legal system to their advantage. Spanish and portuguese did not wish to eliminate native american populations. Viewed natives as a principle source of wealth. Led iberians to establish nearly all of their colonies on top of or alongside pre existing native communities. Tribute in the form of agricultural surplus and herd growth, as well as labor. Rebellions broke out, and portuguese in brazil soon started enslaving natives. Conquest shifted early on to complex business of colonization and the negotiated imposition of colonial rule. Divided inhabitants of colonies into two political categories: Spanish and natives governed themselves, on different levels.
