Document Summary

In the 1950s children were being raised much differently from the older generations. The punishment was starting to become more lenient, and parents started to become lenient by giving their kids cars, the freedom to go out on dates, wearing lipstick, getting their hair done, etc. , Since families were earning more and most women were working full time so parents could provide more luxuries to their children. For example, that back in the day people used to get slapped with a rule for misbehavior but in the 1950s if someone did that they would get arrested. Parents were literally convinced that rock n" roll reinforced the most worrisome aspects of youth culture: antagonism to adult authority and expectations; conformity to peer-group norms; and an ephemeral, erratic emotional intensity. Popular music wasn"t the only symbol that caused a generational conflict. It was also the mass media and the marketplace; it seemed, teenagers separated themselves from the rest of the population.
