Addiction is often misused so therefore it is now referred to as substance use disorder in the dsm 5. Dsm 5: provides criteria for diagnosing a myriad of psychiatric disorders. Addiction: a condition or state in which a person lives, or to a progressive process that lead from recreational to compulsive and habitual drug use. Includes diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder and substance induced disorders. Clarifies that substance use disorder is a singular condition with varying degrees of severity. A bluster of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms that manifest with compulsive drug taking. An addict may be free of their symptoms of addiction and remain free for extended period, but the symptoms can and often do appear at any time. Self injurious behavior must be out of the individuals control and due to substance abuse. Intense preoccupation, strong desire, or overwhelming urge to use a substance.
