Document Summary

Bio 180: chapter 2. 1: atoms, ions, and molecules: the building blocks of chemical. The theory of chemical evolution maintains that adding lots of energy to the earth"s system (before life was present) caused increasingly complex substances to form, which culminated in substances that could replicate themselves. 96% of life on earth is composed of the atoms h (hydrogen), o (oxygen), c (carbon), n (nitrogen) We need to know how something is put together to understand what it does and how it does it. There are 3 subatomic particles: electrons, protons, neutrons. Protons are positively charged and weigh 1 dalton (da) Electrons are negatively charged and weigh next to nothing. Neutrons are neutral are weigh approx. the same as protons: 1da. Protons and neutrons form a circular mass called nucleus in the middle of the atom. Electrons revolve around the nucleus in spherical shells. In neutral atoms, there are same number of electrons and protons.
