No single definition but most agree organisms share 5 fundamental characteristics: energy - require and use energy to stay alive and reproduce. ( ex: food & photosynthesis , cells - membrane-bound units that make up organisms. Regulates passage of materials between exterior and interior spaces. Information - organisms process hereditary/genetic info encoded in units called genes. Almost everything an organism does is to replicate itself: evolution - organisms are product of evolution and their populations continue to evolve.
