Document Summary

Meiosis solves riddle of fertilization: weismann"s hypothesis. Reduction division precedes gamete formation in animals. Involves hundreds of different proteins: accomplishes something extremely important: Chromosomes in one gamete are different from chromosomes in another gamete and different from chromosomes in parental cells. Fertilization brings haploid sets of chromosomes from mother and father together. Because of crossing over and independent shuffling of parent chromosomes: forms diploid offspring. Offspring chromosomes are unlike its parents: random combination of genetic material form each parent. Changes in chromosome sets occur only during sexual reproduction not asexual. Reproduciton: asexual reproduction - producing offspring w/o production and fusion of gametes. Asexual reproduction in eukaryotes based on mitosis. Chromosomes in cells by mitosis are identical to chromosomes of parent cells: sexual reproduction - producing offspring w/ production and fusion of gametes. Changes in chromosomes produced by meiosis & fertilization are important since chromosomes contain the cell"s hereditary material: chromosomes contain the information for specifying certain traits.
