Not a lot of people get treatment. But, treatment rates are higher for those with more severe mental disorders. Why many people fail to seek treatment: people may not realize that they have a mental disorder than could be effectively treated. Don"t think they need to be treated. Mostly hidden illnesses with no clear symptoms shown on things like blood tests or x-rays: there may be barriers to treatment, such as beliefs and circumstances that keep people from getting help. People think they can handle things themselves. Belief that their problem is not that severe. Perceived stigma from others: structural barriers prevent people from physically getting to treatment. People don"t receive the most effective treatment possible. Specialized training in assessing and treating mental disorders. Have training in working with people in dire life situations.
