Document Summary
Pns transmits variety of information to the cns. Pns has two primary components: somatic nervous system, autonomic nervous system. Our somatic nervous system detects sensory input and responds. Somatic nervous system - transmits signals to and from cns through nerves. Specialized receptors in skin, muscles, and joints send sensory information to the spinal cord, relaying it to the brain. Cns sends signals through somatic nervous system to muscles, joints and skin to initiate or inhibit movement. Our autonomic nervous system regulates the body automatically. Autonomic nervous system - regulates body"s internal environment. Accomplishes this by stimulating glands (sweat) and maintains internal organs (heartbeat) Nerves in autonomic nervous system carry signals from glands and internal organs to cns, providing information about the fullness of your stomach, your anxiety, etc. Autonomic nervous system = automatic processes (heartbeat, blood pressure, respiration, things out of our control) Two divisions that control the activity of organs and glands: sympathetic nervous system.
