Document Summary

Through classical conditioning, we learn that stimuli are related. Russian physiologist ivan pavlov designed apparatus that measured how various types of food placed into a dog"s mouth resulted in different amounts of saliva to investigate the digestive system. The dog thus showed learning through classical conditioning. Pavlov"s experiment reveal the four steps in classical conditioning. Unconditioned stimulus (us) - stimulus that elicits a response that is innate and does not require any prior learning (food for the dog) Unconditioned response (ur) - a response that does not have to be learned, such as a reflex (the dog salivating) Neutral stimulus - anything that is not associated with the ur (metronome to the dog) Conditioned stimulus (cs) - a stimulus that elicits a response only after learning has taken place (dog salivates when hearing metronome after learning to associate it with food)
