Document Summary
Blocking occurs when we are temporarily unable to remember something: ex: tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon. Often occurs because of interference from words similar in some way like in sound or meaning and are repeatedly experienced. Ex: repeatedly calling an acquaintance margaret even though her name is. Absentmindedness - inattentive or shallow encoding of events. Major cause: failing to pay attention: ex: forgetting where you put your keys because you were answering the phone as you put them down. Persistence occurs when unwanted memories recur despite our desire not to have them: ex: ptsd. Distortion (human memory is not a perfectly accurate representation of the past, but is flawed) occurs in memory in four ways: memory bias. Changing of memories over time so they become consistent with our current beliefs or attitudes. Ex: exaggerating contributions to group efforts: flashbulb memories. Vivid memories that seem like flash photos, capturing circumstances that we first learned of a surprising and consequential or emotionally arousing event.
