Sensory storage - very brief maintenance system for sensory information. Five types of sensory stores: visual input, auditory input, smell input, taste input, touch input. Working memory allows us to actively maintain information in short-term storage. Short-term storage: memory storage system that briefly holds a limited amount of information awareness, simply a buffer or holding place, small amount of information can be encoded primarily based on auditory information and visual information. Ex: remembering a phone number for a short time. Enables us to work on information we have in short-term storage. Allows us to actively process sounds, images, and ideas. Allows us to repeat a phone number so that we can maintain it longer in. Capacity of short-term storage: psychologist george miller noted capacity limit of short-term storage to be generally seven items +2 -2.
