Many mothers, many fathers, many others - insights from other cultures. Nonfamily member involvement in the care and rearing of children is both historically and cross - culturally the norm rather than the exception . Fathers - best dads in the world . New to the west (usa) but has been seen in other cultures. Culture believes child can have several biological fathers. All expected to contribute toward child"s well - being. Children raised by mother, aunts, uncles, & grandparents. Children with more contact with their grandparents had higher cognitive development. Kids can go to grandparents if parents are arguing or there"s just a stressful family situation. Grandparents, particularly maternal grandmothers, exert a positive effect on the survival rates of infants & children in traditional societies . Presence of grandmothers = higher child survival. Maternal grandmothers have more contact with their grandchildren than do paternal grandmothers . Grandparents" education made a difference in whether their grandchildren attended college .
