Grandparents, particularly maternal grandmothers, exert a positive effect on the survival rates of infants & children in traditional societies . Presence of grandmothers = higher child survival. Maternal grandmothers have more contact with their grandchildren than do paternal grandmothers . Grandparents" education made a difference in whether their grandchildren attended college .
