Psc 162: personality puzzle ch. 1- the study of the person. Psychological triad: how people feel, think, and behave. Trying to understand the whole person > not just parts. Personality: an individual"s characteristic patterns of thought, emotion and behavior, together with the psychological mechanisms behind those patterns. 5 basic approaches: trait, biological, psychoanalytic, phenomenological and learning and cognitive processes. Each addresses certain aspects of human psychology; while ignoring others. Basic approach: (paradigm) a systematic, self-imposed imitation of observation, pattern seeking and thinking. Trait approach: how people"s differences might be conceptualized, measured and followed over time. Biological approach: addressing the biological mechanisms such as anatomy, physiology, genetics, even evolution and their relevance for personality. Psychoanalytic approach: concerned primarily with the unconscious mind, and the nature and resolution of internal mental conflict. Phenomenological approach: (humanistic psychology) focus on people"s conscious experience of the world. Learning: how people change their behavior as a result of rewards, punishments and other experiences in life.
