Need to frame the contemporary with a bit of the past. Context: 1965 immigration law & 1980s with early 1990s. 1965 immigration law: abolished national origins and instituted the preference system. Long term-undocumented immigrants: live like others, learn to blend in, children learn scripts. Separation: separating themselves from their families back home. Transition: changing from the old to the new. Old culture and society to new culture and us society. Incorporation (may or may not happen): being incorporated into different parts of us society. Us to work and give a better life to their families. Hard to get back into us = unintended consequence of border control. Tale of two students: swiss american citizen (grad school, financial aid, back to europe). Undocumented came at 1 year old (no financial aid, no social services, cant work, stay in us) Deaths: in us between 1995 and 2005, deaths doubled. Green valley (ch 5 and 6) recent migrants.
