You might not have to read every word on every page, rather pay close attention to the questions in this guide and answer them as you work through the textbook. The plasma membranse separates the living cells from its surroundings and control traffic in and out of the membrance. It is selectively permeable and this means that it only allos some substances to corss it more easily that other. Phospholipids are the most abundant lipid in plasma membranes. There are the most phospolipids in the plasma membrane and they are amphipathic. This means that it has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions. This results in a bilayer where the hydrophobic tail is sheltered from the water by the hydrophilic head.
