Concentration gradient: a region along which the density of a chemical substance increases or deceases. A substance will diffuse down the concentration gradient (where its density decreases) Because the cell doesn"t have to expend energy for it to happen as it is a spontaneous process. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
