Document Summary

Typological thinking is based on the idea that species are unchanging types and that variations within species are unimportant or even misleading. Lamarckian evolution = progressive evolution that produces larger/more complex/better species. Population thinking - variation among individuals in a population was the key to understanding the nature of species. Fossil - any trace of an organism that lived in the past. Fossil record - all the fossils that have been found on earth and described in the scientific literature. Extinct species - species that no longer exist. Researchers created geologic time scale (a sequence of named intervals called eons, eras and periods that represented the major events in earth history) from the similarities in the rocks and fossils at different sites. Geologic record indicated earth was much older than 6000 years. Transitional feature - trait in a fossil species that is intermediate b/w those of ancestral and younger species.
