Document Summary

Course: bio e109: the autonomic nervous system performs a variety of functions. [1] autonomic tone: the balance between para/sympathetic activity. Regulated by the hypothalamus, turns down parasympathetic tone at the same time it turns up sympathetic tone, and vice versa. Sweat glands, arrector pilli muscles attached to hair follicles in the skin, the kidneys, the spleen, most blood vessels, adrenal medullae of the adrenal glands. Three decrease : decrease heart rate, decrease diameter of the bronchial tubes of the lungs(bronchoconstriction), decreased diameter of the pupils(pupillary constriction) The diameter of the pupils increases(pupillary dilation) Heart rate, force of heart contraction, and blood pressure increase. Bronchodilation, allowing faster movement of air into/out of lungs. Blood vessels that supply the kidney&gi tract constrict, decrease blood flow through these tissues. The result is a slowing of urine formation and digestive activites. Blood vessels that supply organs involved in exercise/fighting of danger skeletal muscles, cardiac muscles, liver, adipose tissue dilate.
