Document Summary

5: molecules and compounds: hydrogen, oxygen, and water. H2: explosive gas used as a fuel. *when two or more elements combine to form a compound, an entirely new substance results. In compounds, elements combine in fixed, definite proportions. In mixtures, elements mix in any proportions: types of chemical bonds. Chemical bonds= forces that holds atoms together in a compound. Chemical formula= indicates the elements present in the compound and the relative number of atoms/ions of each: usually lists the more metallic one first (more positively charged less electrons) Empirical formula= gives the relative number of atoms of each element in a compound. Molecular formula= gives the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecular of a compound: always a whole number ration of empirical formula. Structural formula= uses lines to represent covalent bonds and shows how they are connected/bonded to each other: indicates the most information.
