What are piaget"s four stages of cognitive development: conclusions on the way children think, how biology and experience shape cog dev, build mental structures that help us adapt, processes: Assimilation: use existing schemes to deal with new information. Accommodation: adjust their schemes to take account of new information and experiences. Organization: grouping of isolated behaviors and thoughts into a higher-order system. Inevitably experiencing cognitive conflict/inconsistencies (disequilibrium: children constantly assimilate and accommodate in order to establish equilibrium, 4 stages of cog dev: What are the main characteristics of the preoperational stage: represent the world with words, images, and drawings, no able to do things mentally before they could do only physically, two stages: Gain ability to mentally represent an object that is not present (scribble designs represent people, houses, cars, etc. ) Egocentrism: inability to distinguish between one"s own perspective and someone else"s perspective. Animism: inanimate objects have lifelike qualities, capable of action.
