Wide ranging pattern of physical complaints that dominate life and relationships. Physical malfunctioning (ex: paralysis, blindness, difficulty speaking) Treatment = process trauma, freudian psychodynamic view: remove secondary gains. Psychological factors play role in physical suffering. Characterized by alteration in perceptions, sense of detachment from own self, world, etc. Alters = different identities; host = identity that keeps other identities together; switch = transition from one personality to another. Causes = severe trauma, ptsd; did acts as mechanism to escape traumatizing impacts. Treatments = reintegration of identities; identify and neutralize cues that trigger dissociation; patient may have to relive and confront trauma. Unable to remember anything, unable to recall specific events that occur during a specific period or localized time.
