Most common psychological disorders particularly in younger people. Disorders that involve severe and enduring disturbances in emotionality ranging from elation to severe depression. 1+ major depressive episode separated by periods of remission. Single episode highly unusual, recurrent is more common. Characterized by disturbances in mood that include elevated mood and may also include depressed mood. History of at least one full manic episode. Alternates between full manic episodes and major depressive episodes. History of hypomanic episode(s) and major depressive episode(s) 2+ years of sub-threshold hypomanic & depressive symptoms. Chronic version of bipolar disorder (must last for at least 2 years) Alternating between mild depressive symptoms and mild hypomanic symptoms. Develop full blown bipolar disorder. Milder more chronic version of bipolar disorder. *an individual who suffers from episodes of depression is unipolar but an individual who alternates between depression and mania is bipolar* Symptoms of depression increasing dramatically in elderly population.
