EPS SCI 15 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-3: Elevation, Bathymetry, Southern Ocean
Document Summary
People who populated the paci c islands may have been the rst great navigators. There is not a mountain on earth that is as tall as the ocean is deep. The scienti c method is used to understand the occurrence of physical events. Protoearth, more massive and larger than earth today, was molten and homogenous. Protoearth began a period of rearrangement called density strati cation and formed a layered internal structure based on density. 4 principal oceans (the paci c, atlantic, indian, and arctic oceans) + additional ocean (the southern or antarctic ocean). Near the surface, the lithosphere is composed of continental and oceanic crust. Once earth s surface cooled suf ciently, the water vapor condensed and accumu- lated to give earth its oceans. Rainfall on the surface dissolved compounds that, when carried to the ocean, made it salty. Life is thought to have begun in the oceans.
