Coleman quartet played first nightclub gig in nyc. 11/1959, ignited an explosion of exploratory creative activity. Played a white plastic alto sax (dry sound) that emphasized crying quality in his melodies. Played with characteristics such as multiphonics (two or more notes at once), overtones (notes higher than a horn"s normal range) **so did albert ayler** and they later inspired others. Free jazz: style dx in the 1960s-70s that relies on neither key nor chord progressions for improvisational style. Freed themselves from traditional harmony, sound, form and also began activism for social issues and civil rights movement. Jazz world"s advocacy of freedom and racial equality began when whites became aware that many of their favorite jazz musicians were black. 1960s, calls of social liberation came in the form of songs and band names.
