PSYCH 120A Chapter Notes - Chapter ZAPS 7-10: Long-Term Memory, Anterograde Amnesia, Echoic Memory
Document Summary
Working memory: processing system that keeps info available for current use. Can only maintain 5-9 pieces of info for up to 20-30s. Long term memory: can be accessed later on. Serial position effect: memory bias in which our ability to recall a given item from a series depends on its relative position in that series. Primacy effect: better recall of items at the beginning. Mentally rehearse items at the beginning enhanced recollection. Recency effect: better recall of items at the end. Items near the end are still in working memory and can easily be retrieved. If there is a delay in time between the presentation of a list and the participants" recall of that list, the recency effect disappears but primacy effect remains. Anterograde amnesia: cannot form new long term memories. Recency effect when there is no delay but not the primacy effect.
