Document Summary

Infants begin life with innate, special purpose knowledge systems referred to as core domains of thought. Prewired understandings permits a ready grasp of new related information and supports early rapid development of certain aspects of cognition. Domains have evolutionary history and are essential for survival. Physical knowledge: understanding of objects and their effects on one another. Numerical knowledge: capacity to keep track of multiple objects and to add and subtract small quantities. Psychological knowledge: understanding of people as agents who have mental states (emotions, intentions, desires, etc) Biological knowledge: ideas about inheritance of characteristics and about bodily processes. Core knowledge theorists view development as domain specific and uneven with each domain developing independently. Children build on core knowledge concepts to explain everyday experiences. Young infants are aware of basic object properties and build on this knowledge quickly. 2. 5mo can recognize that one solid object cannot move through another solid object.
