PSYCH 130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2.4: Informed Consent, Phenotype, Heredity
Document Summary
Study the same participants over the same ages but in different years. Or study participants over different ages but during the same years. Can determine cohort effects by comparing participants of the same age but born different years. If both longitudinal and cross sectional comparisons are similar we can be confident about the findings. Microgenetic design: presents children with a novel task and follows their mastery over a series of closely spaced sessions. Difficult to carry out must analyze recorded info/behaviors many times. Time required for children to change is hard to anticipate. Can compare with cross sectional observations to check for distortion. Longitudinal and cross sectional research are correlational not causal. Can combine an experimental strategy with a longitudinal or cross sectional approach. Children are more vulnerable to physical and psychological harm. Immaturity makes it difficult or impossible for children to evaluate for themselves what participation in research will mean.
