PSYCH 130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2.1: Naturalistic Observation, Observer-Expectancy Effect
Document Summary
Taking tests, answering questionnaires, interviews, being observed, etc. Theories structure the research process by identifying important research concerns and occasionally preferred methods for collecting data. Once tested, reflect the accuracy of the theory. Can test hypotheses from different theories against each other. Or test predictions drawn from a single theory. Need to be wise and critical consumers of knowledge. If there is little or no theory, researcher may start with a research question. Know the strengths and limitations of various research strategies to separate dependable info from misleading results. Individuals who work directly with children can build bridges between research and practice by conducting studies on their own or in partnership with experienced investigators. Naturalistic observation: go into the field and record behavior of interest. Cons: can"t control conditions under which participants are observed. Accuracy may be reduced by observer influence or bias. Not all children have the same opportunity to display a particular behavior in everyday life.
