PSYCH 130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3.10: Twin Study, Heredity, Heritability
Document Summary
Likelihood of long term difficulties increased if birth trauma was severe. Mildly to moderately stressed children growing up in stable families did almost as well on measures of intelligence and psychological adjustment as those with no birth problems. Those exposed to poverty, family disorganization and mentally ill parents often developed serious learning difficulties, behavior problems and emotional disturbance. As long as injuries are not overwhelming a supporting home environment can restore growth. Few children with fairly serious birth complications and troubled family environments grew into competent adults who fared as well as controls in career attainment and psych adjustment. Relied on factors outside of family and within themselves to overcome stress. Some had attractive personalities that drew positive responses from others. Heritability estimates measure the extent to which individuals differences in complex traits in a specific population are due to genetic factors. Kinship studies: compare the characteristics of family members.
