Document Summary

Context: everything that affects a relationship outside of the couple and their interactions; includes physical surrounding as well as social, cultural, and historical elements. Figure 11. 2 the social ecological model applied to relationship context. Proximal context: contextual elements that are parts of the couple"s immediate environment, affect them most directly. Time of day an interaction takes place, room couple interacts in etc. Context that couple probably thinks about when considering ways they may be affected by outside forces because it is the most apparent. Distal context: elements that are removed from couple, no direct contact. Effects of elements at any given level are likely to be influenced by elements at more distal levels. E. g. , family support available is affected by the culture one is in. Complete understanding of the effects of any element in the proximal context usually requires an understanding of the distal context as well.
