Document Summary
Chapter 29: cultural structuralist theory: pierre bourdieu jonathan turner. Empirically observable phenomena (literary text/social structure) are constructed in conformity to an implicit logic. Still an emphasis on symbolic codes: causally influenced by material conditions and are subject to interpretation by lay agents. Structure of cultural codes is causally linked to behavior and interpersonal activities of individuals but also institutional parameters within which such activities are conducted. One of the most influential cultural theorists is pierre bourdieu. Bourdieu characterized his work as constructivist structuralism or structuralist constructivism. Structuralism/structuralist: there exists, within the social world, objective structures independent of the consciousness and will of agents, capable of guiding and constraining their practices or their representations. Structures constrain and circumscribe volition, but people use capacities for thought, reflection and action to construct social and cultural phenomena. Do this within the parameters of existing structures. These structures are materials for a wide variety of social and cultural constructions.
