COMM 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Glossophobia, Hypertension, Communication Apprehension
Document Summary
Phobia: a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid: glossophobia: fear of public speaking. Communication apprehension: fear/anxiety associated with real or anticipated communication with another or others: this is not specific to public speaking, this is not fear. One end we"re completely comfortable and the other end we"re always reluctant: self-fulfilling prophecy: convincing yourself that something is going to happen before it does, thus leading to the occurrence of what you originally expected. Physical effects of communication apprehension: anxieties begin in the brain with thoughts and perceptions about things around us, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, and galvanic skin tightening are 3 physical effects of anxiety. The galvanic skin tightening is what causes the speaker to sweat. Combating communication apprehension: practice, practice, and practice. Higher apprehension about speaking leads to higher procrastination. First to a wall, then to a mirror, and then to friends/family.
