Processor (or cpu central processing unit) is the brain of the computer. Does calculations, coordinates and controls other parts of the computer, etc. Speed of cpu is measured in hertz (hz) Growth of speed has slowed down in recent years. Each core is like its own cpu. Quad core is like having four cpus. Just about any data can be represented in numbers. Basic unit of measure for computer memory is bit. Can only be either 0 or 1. Any regular number can be represented in binary. All data is stored as a sequence of 0s and 1s. Eight bits are grouped together into a unit called a byte. 1 kilobyte (kb) is about 1,000 bytes. 1 megabyte (mb) is about 1,000,000 bytes. 1 gigabyte (gb) is about 1,000,000,000 bytes.
