Anthropology- a comparative science that examines all societies (ancient, modern, simple and complex) Ethnography- first hand personal study of local settings: fieldwork requires spending a year or more in another society/culture, living with the people and learning about their way of life. Human adaptability: anthropology- the study of human species and its immediate ancestors. Process of enculturation allows children to learn traditions and customs by growing up in a particular society. Transmission is through learning not biological inheritance. Adaptation, variation, and change: adaptation- processes by which organisms cope with environmental forces and stresses, ex. General anthropology: general anthropology- academic discipline of anthropology, four main disciplines. Sociocultural (cultural), archaeological, biological, and linguistic anthropology. Cultural- study changes in social life and customs. Archaeological- use studies of current societies to learn about the past. Biological- research about evolutionary changes in physical form. Linguistic- reconstruct basics of ancient languages by studying modern ones.
