Document Summary

Muscles exert movement by exerting force and causing a change in the shape of the muscles. The two categories of movement are: movement of the animal in relation to it"s environment. When an animal moves from one place to another under it"s own power, it is called locomotion. Locomotion includes modes of transportation such as undulating, jetting, swimming, walking, running, gliding flying, and jumping: movement from one part of an animal to another part of the animal. Biomechanics is a research field that studies the principles of physics and engineering are applied to questions about the mechanical structures and functions of organism. A muscle fiber is a long, thin muscle cell and within each muscle cell there is a threadlike, contractile structure called myofibrils. Sarcomeres repeat along the length of a myofibril alternating right and left. As myofibrils contract, the sarcomeres shorten and lengthen when the cell relaxes and an external force stretches the muscle.
