BIOL 1107 Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Document Summary
Water is only common substance that exists naturally in all three physical states of matter. Structure of water molecule allows it to interact with other molecules. Water molecules are polar hydrogen bonds. Four emergent properties of water: cohesive behavior. Cohesion: hydrogen bonds stick to other hydrogen molecules (between water molecules) Stick to itself as one moves next gets pulled up move as column. When water molecules leave, they carry water pull others that arrive below by pulling each other, water molecules will go up. Help the transport of water with gravity in plants. Water can also attach to walls of plants and go up tree. Ex. some water molecules attach to walls of tree or cat drinking water water attaches to tongue. Surface tension: measure of how difficult to break surface of liquid. Hydrogen-bonded to one another + water below but not air above. Hydrogen molecules are held together by cohesion. Water has an unusually high surface tension.
