BIOL 1107 Chapter 1-5: Section 2 notes
Document Summary
Concept 4. 1: organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds. Organic molecules and the origin of life on earth. Miller"s experiments of spontaneously creating complex organic molecules support the idea of abiotic synthesis of organic compounds. Mechanism: the view that physical and chemical laws govern all natural phenomenon. Concept 4. 2: carbon atoms can form diverse molecules by bonding to four other atoms. Carbon has 6 electrons, 2 in first shell, 4 in valence. Carbon completes the shell by sharing its 4 electrons constituting a covalent bond. When it forms four single covalent bonds, the arrangement of the four hybrid orbitals causes the bonds to angle to the corners of imaginary tetrahedron (methane) In molecules with more carbons, every carbon bonded to four other atoms has a tetrahedral shape (ethane) When joined by a double bond, the atoms joined to those carbons are in the same plane as the carbons (ethene) Molecular diversity arising from carbon skeleton variation.
