DGS 3223 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Cytogenetics, Chorionic Villi, Asepsis
Document Summary
Solid tissues: the toughest type of sample, often come from one-of-a-kind samples. Solid tumors: often contain few viable cells, microbial contamination is much more common among these types of samples, no repeat available. Solid tumors may offer the chance of a repeat sample. If mother brings the sample in, it is most likely not sterile: the best tissues to sample. Stillbirths skin, muscle, and cartilage frequently sampled. Cartilage is best for post-mortem samples; it is protected in a way that other tissues aren"t and will survive longer than other tissues after death. Pocs chorionic villi are excellent; better than fetal parts. Villi are great for sampling because they actively divide; they are one of the only other types of cells that are actively dividing besides bone marrow. Skin biopsies a layer of fat indicates the sample was deep enough to contain fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are our favorite type of cell to culture.
