Children"s friendships, courtships, marriages are said to have started relationship science. Study of student friendships in campus housing (1950s) president of american psychological association calls attention to lack of knowledge regarding this topic of love and affection. Ellen berscheid and elaine hatfield begin studying love and affection. Fueled by lab experiments in social psychology. Asked people to inspect an attitude survey supposedly completed by a stranger in another room (truly created by researchers) Asked how much they liked the stranger. Agreement on opinions caused people to like stranger more. Methodical rigor of experiment satisfies clarity and concision (minimal words to convey an idea) Legitimized and popularized study of interpersonal attraction. Proved relationships can be studied scientifically and investigations can be promising. Failed to represent natural complexity of real relationships. Limited to 1 controlled aspect of relationship development.
