Chapter 13: the age of dissent and division 1500-1564. The protestant reformation grew out of earlier attempts at reform and (cid:862)re(cid:272)e(cid:374)t(cid:863) de(cid:448)elop(cid:373)e(cid:374)ts. Within a decade of martin luther challenging the papacy, there was lots of religious dissent: many protestant faiths were taking hold in europe. Religious pluralism transformed the political landscape of europe and the basic structures of family and attitudes toward marriage and sexuality. The structure and doctrine of the roman catholic church changed ~ reemerged as a separate institution than the medieval church. 1521~ luther was excommunicated at the diet of worms. 1520s~lutheranims becomes the official religion of scandinavian country. 1534~henry viii establishes the church of england. Ignatius loyola founds the society of jesus (jesuits) 1541~geneva adopts a theocratic government based on calvinism. 1553-1558~mary tudor attempts to restore catholic faith in england. 1564~ (cid:858)i(cid:374)de(cid:454) of prohi(cid:271)ited books(cid:859) is pu(cid:271)lished. Luther attacked religious, political and social institutions.
